In our continued effort to bring a variety of programming, AIGA Jacksonville will be joined by guest, James Bowie, an expert in the field of branding this Thursday. He will be presenting an in-depth discussion on trends in logo design. Don’t miss out on this special guest!
James Bowie is a sociologist who studies logo design by analyzing a data set of over 1.2 million logo designs registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, examining such things as the most popular colors and shapes used in the logos of various industries and in different decades, trends such as swooshes and leaves in logo design, and whether using a logo design that “breaks the rules” is an effective strategy.
He first explored this topic in his Ph.D. dissertation, and recently launched a website, Emblemetric, that features regular updates on his research. Since its debut, Emblemetric has been featured in Design Observer, Brand New, The Daily Heller, Fast Company, Creative Review, Logo Design Love, and elsewhere.
His writing on design has appeared in Voice: AIGA Journal of Design, BusinessWeek Online, Brand New, and The Alcalde. He has presented his research on logo design at the Phoenix Design Week Conference and the University of Texas Design Lecture Series. He served on the Arizona State Quarter Commission, which helped design the Arizona state quarter coin, and he is a contributor to UnderConsideration’s Quipsologies website.
