AIGA Jacksonville Student Design Competition

AIGA Jacksonville is excited to announce its first Student Design Competition, created to recognize the best work by graphic design students and recent graduates in the region. Determined by a jury of local design professionals, winners will be announced at the 25th Annual Portfolio Review in April, and will also be published in a student design annual, assuring important exposure to potential employers and clients. Submissions must be received by Monday, March 24, 2014. Be sure to read through all the competition guidelines below before submitting your work.

What’s the competition deadline?
All entries must be received by Monday, March 24, 2014.

Who’s eligible to enter the competition?
Currently enrolled students and recent graduates (having earned their degree in Fall 2013) may enter the competition.

Do I have to participate in the Portfolio Review Weekend to enter the Student Design Competition?
No.

What kind of work can I enter?
You may enter work into the following categories:

  • Advertising (single ads, campaign series, billboards, etc.)
  • Identity (logos, letterhead, business cards, )
  • Illustration
  • Motion Graphics (kinetic typography, movie titles, anim. logos, interstitials, etc.)
  • Packaging
  • Poster
  • Publication (books, dust jackets, magazines, brochures, annual reports, etc.)
  • Typography (hand-rendered type, typeface design, expert typographic use etc.)
  • Web/Interactive (websites, web animation, apps, digital publications, etc.)

Choose the category you feel best fits your submission. If we feel another category is more appropriate, we will move it; your work will not be penalized or disqualified.

What materials are eligible?
Submissions must have been produced between January 2013 and March 2014. Professional, freelance and internship work is not eligible for competition.

Can I submit more than one entry in the same category?
You may enter multiple pieces in the same category, but must register and pay for each entry separately.

Can I enter my work as a series?
You may enter work in a series if it is part of the same campaign. These works will be judged as a group. The overall strength of the series depends on each individual piece and its function within the campaign.

How much does it cost?
$10 per single entry. No more than five entries per person.

How do I enter the competition?
All entrants must use the online form to register submissions and submit payment (via credit card or PayPal).How should I submit my work?

Entries in the Web/Interactive and Motion categories should be submitted via a URL at the time of registration. All other categories must be submitted in print, and may be mailed or delivered to the Art & Design Department at the University of North Florida by Monday, March 24, 2014. Submit a printed copy of your registration form with print submissions.

*The UNF Department of Art & Design is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office will be closed Thursday, March 20, and Friday, March 21, for Spring Break.

How should print entries be submitted?
Submit proofs or tearsheets, unmounted and trimmed. Send annual reports, brochures, books, etc., in bound form. Logos/identities submitted as print must be centered on an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet. Place the company name and nature of the business next to the mark. For posters larger than 24" x 36" and packaging, displays or signage larger than one cubic foot, submit JPG files (with a maximum resolution of 1024 wide x 768 high at 72 dpi in RGB) on a CD clearly labeled with your information.

When will the winners be announced?
Competition winners will be revealed during the Portfolio Review Weekend, April 11–12, 2014.

What kind of awards are there?
There are two categories of awards. The Award of Excellence recognizes works that showcase the highest level of graphic design creativity, conceptualization and craft. The Award of Merit recognizes works of superior achievement. Additionally, a Best Of Show winner will be named for the overall competition. The judges reserved the right to assign no winners to a category if the quality of submissions does not meet their expectations.

What do I get if I win?
Acclaim as one of the top student designers in the region and important exposure to creative professionals. Winning submissions will be published in a student design annual, to be distributed to AIGA Jacksonville members. If your entry is selected for an award, we may request additional materials from you for reproduction.

How will the competition be judged?
Entries will be judged blind by a panel of design professionals representing a range of expertises in the creative industry.

Will I get my work back?
Entries will be available for pick-up during the Portfolio Review Weekend. We will do our best to return projects in their original condition.

What if I change my mind about entering the competition?
All entry submissions are final and entry fees are nonrefundable.
