Yellow House continues to foster its mission to connect art and action in its upcoming exhibit SUFFRAGE. The exhibit will spark civic engagement as it builds an understanding of the importance of an informed vote on the issues that will drive us to the midterm polls. It is a moment to transform suffering and rage into progress through the power of an engaged electorate.
SUFFRAGE will fill the galleries at Yellow House with compelling, provocative, and socially impactful design and illustration by world-renowned political cartoonist Ed Hall, dozens of female and gender non-conforming designers from Jacksonville, and a selection from the national traveling exhibition “Power to the Polls” sponsored by Amplifier and the National Women’s March. Works will apply words and images to the complex collection of issues that will inform our votes on November 6th. The exhibition spotlights racial equity, voting rights restoration, universal healthcare, women’s rights, gun control, LGBTQ rights, economic parity, public education, disability rights, food politics, immigration, and a special focus on climate change and the rising waters in our own community.
SUFFRAGE will have its opening reception 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, October 9, one month prior to the November 6th midterm elections. The exhibition will be on view through November 10th. Yellow House is open every Wednesday from 11am – 7pm and Saturdays from 11am – 2pm. There will also be two free gallery talks. On October 15th from 6 – 8pm Lisa Rinaman of the St. Johns Riverkeeper and climate change artists will lead a discussion about the latest environmental issues driving this election cycle. Cartoonist Ed Hall and Designer Karen Kurycki will share their work and the intersections of design and social activism on October 29 6 – 8pm.
The exhibition is co-curated by Hope McMath and Karen Kurycki, in collaboration with Amplifier and the St. Johns Riverkeeper.
