We are excited to host Patrick Carter of 63 Visual on our Instagram! Not too familiar with this Jacksonville design legend? Read below to learn more about Patrick!
AIGA Jax: How long have you been a part of AIGA Jax’s community?
Patrick Carter: I was introduced to AIGA as a student at UNF in 2003. Since then AIGA has been a big part of my career development, beginning with the student portfolio reviews, then being a part of the mentorship program for high school students, becoming a board member, attending several national leadership retreats, and serving a term as Vice President for AIGA Jacksonville.
AJ:How long have you been doing 63 Visual?
PC: I began building a client list while working for advertising agencies in the mid to late 2000s, and officially founded 63 Visual in 2010. 63 Visual is now entering its 11th year in business.
AJ: What are some takeaways from being a freelance designer/owning your own business?
PC: I found it to be very important to first build my skill set by working for agencies and focusing on personal development through AIGA early in my career. It wasn’t until I felt that I had learned everything that I could as a young designer that I started my company as full-time self-employment. Running a design studio offers a lot of independence and opportunities to shape your own future and career, but it also comes with a lot of hurdles and challenges that my early development prepared me for.
AJ: What are your favorite AIGA Jax events and why?
PC: Cocktails & Creatives are always fun because they are a casual way to meet people in your local design community and have fun socially. Speaker events are also great because you can learn new perspectives from industry leaders. But as my favorite event, I’m partial to the Design & Music Festival Poster Show as that was an event that I founded while on the board, which used to be called Always Summer.
AJ: When you’re not designing, what are your favorite things to do?
PC: I’m actually fortunate, as many people in our industry are, that design is one of my favorite things to do as well as what I do for a living. Aside from design, surfing is by far my favorite thing to do, followed by working out in the gym, doing yoga, and having out with friends and family.
