Jenny Kubicki is the current graphic designer and photographer at the University of North Florida Admissions Department. She is also director/co-founder at Jacksonville Bicycle Coalition. For Always Summer 2010, Jenny decided to do “Bring on the Night” by the Police.
“I chose that particular song to apply kind of a dry, subtle sense of humor to the Summer Poster Show. When I think summer I think HOT here in Florida. The main lyric displayed in the poster was “Bring on the night… I couldn’t stand another hour of daylight”. The song itself is a fantastic song too, by the way! I always have a sudden urge to dance whenever I hear it. It’s also kind of sexy if you’re into that era and style of music.”
“I wanted to attempt a very simple, abstract approach. I’ve come to notice the older an artist gets, the more they tend to desire abstracting unnecessary details to portray the very essence of the idea they’re trying to get across. Well, at least in a lot of cases. I look back on the design now and realize I really ought to have abstracted it much more. The first circle represents the moon. The second circle represents me in the hot summer sun. It certainly wasn’t supposed to be a masterpiece. Just a funny, simple piece.”
“I was into screen printing at the time and had originally screen printed my design, but it ended up looking kind of messy so I decided to have a professional printer print out the poster for the show. I suppose I kind of wanted to show off my screen printing skills, but… womp womp… I failed. And, admittedly, that was another reason I chose to keep a simple approach to the design; in the hopes it would be less of a mess as a screen print.”
