Bryant Hardwick is the Creative Manager of Corporate Communications for Crowley Maritime Corporation. As a lover of all things musical and design, he’s participated in many AIGA events throughout the years, including the Always Summer Poster Show and the Toy Show. Last year, he won first place at the Poster Show with his poster, “Sergent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”.
“Being the world’s second biggest Beatles fan, the question wasn’t finding a summer-y song but rather a Fab Four tune that I could retrofit into a poster contest. Remembering back, my mom gave me Help! on vinyl when I was eight. It was my first record, and it changed my little world. Over the next 20 years, I showered her back with Beatles memorabilia only to recently find out that she was never a big fan. Funny as it sounds, my lifelong musical tastes were shaped by a gift that was probably headed for the trash.”
“In addition to the album’s summer release in 1967, the title of itself helped me confirm this was the avenue to take. The thought of John, Paul, George and Ringo being portrayed as actual peppers made me laugh. The biggest challenge was rendering the faces so you could see their likenesses without them overwhelming the visuals of the peppers. If you don’t get the peppers, you don’t get the joke. As I kept crafting the poster, making the salt & pepper/fork & spoon combinations into the shapes of Paul McCartney’s Hofner bass guitar helped tie everything together as a full culinary take on the song. On a side note, I despise the taste of peppers and strongly believe they contaminate everything they touch.”
“Attending past poster shows made me want to participate. For the last couple of years, I’ve wanted to design something and regretted it most at show time. It also doesn’t help when someone asks “Where’s yours?” and you give the ol’ shoulder shrug. It really is tough to find the time to participate but totally worth it in the end. It’s your chance to design for yourself through a conceptual love letter to a song that means something to you. Was that too corny? Cheesy? Now, I’m hungry.”
