Sean Collins is a UX/UI Designer that wowed the crowd last year with his especially bold poster submission. For those of you that missed it, the poster featured a photographic portrait of Sean dressed as Cleopatra. Headdress, eyeliner, and all. Here’s an inside look at Sean’s poster and what ultimately led him to win the grand prize at the 2012 show!
“I chose Pyramids by Frank Ocean because it’s a rad song. I knew it was going to be my poster song the instant I decided I was going to participate. It came out around the time of my birthday in the beginning of summer, so it was this perfect summery slow jam song. It was on constant repeat for a good few months.”
“In the past few poster shows, I had always attempted to use illustration to convey the message of the songs and was constantly displeased with the outcome. So this time, I decided to try something different and go with a photography approach instead. For the main image, I knew I wanted to do something that looked kind of serious but was funny and a bit off at the same time. The song is about a stripper named Cleopatra who works at a club called The Pyramids so I took a photo of myself wearing a wig and some make-up. It’s funny because I’m a 30 year old with a mustache. See what I did there? Anyway, I did some research on the style that I wanted and went to work.”
“I’ve participated in almost all of the poster shows in the past, and truthfully, I almost didn’t participate in this one. Because I was so displeased with what I had done in the years’ past, I pretty much gave up on it. But my wife, Sarah, convinced me otherwise and told me that I should just try something different. And that’s what I did.”
